MIDDLE GRADES MATTER (blog)
I found this blog that I thought was so awesome. http://www.ed.gov/blog/2011/11/middle-grades-matter/ It is the official blog of the U.S Department of Education. It talks about how middle schools need to be developmentally responsive to be successfull just as its said in This We Believe. The blog post states "Countless studies have shown that if middle level schools are to meet the diverse needs of young adolescents, schools must be developmentally responsive, socially equitable, and academically rigorous." This blog also has links to the AMLE site.

I visited the site and read Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan's speech to the AMLE, 2011.Duncan states that the ML school is the arena for recognizing 75% of future HS drop outs. This statement puts a great deal of pressure on local districts to quickly solve their ML school deficiencies.
ReplyDeleteML schools are no doubt a crucial time in helping students develop the desire to learn. I believe if you can instill that desire in students it will go a long way in reducing the percentage of drop outs in the older grades. We need to be sure to focus on student needs at this age and help them understand the value of knowledge not just the value of memorizing the bare minimum to pass a test.
ReplyDeleteBeing a developmentally responsive school is very important. The best middle schools respond to the needs of adolescents. During the middle grades students go through so many different changes from physical to emotional to psychological and middle schools need to support these changes and offer guidance.
